Yes. They block a large part of the direct heat and glare before it reaches the space, which is what makes a west-facing patio usable in the afternoon rather than something you avoid.
A plain drop blind hangs free at the edges — simpler and cheaper, but it will move in wind. Side tracks hold those edges in channels. Choose on how exposed the patio is.
